Carlos Gracie JrMaster Carlos Gracie Jr

Master Carlos Gracie Jr. is a man ahead of his time. Son of Grand Carlos Gracie Sr., he has used his unique visionary skills to create two of the world’s largest and most important Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Organizations: the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) and Gracie Barra. As founder and current Chairman of both institutions, he has channeled his entrepreneurship to take our sport to the next level allowing thousands of individuals across the five continents to experience the ‘Gentle Art’ as students, instructors, or competitors.

After working for many years as an instructor at his Uncle Helio and then his brother Rolls school, Carlos wanted to pursue the dream of having his own school. But it was not until 1986 that Gracie Barra was officially founded – on the same building that it stands today. He envisioned Jiu-Jitsu as a tool to support any person individual on the quest to achieve his or her potential. He believed teaching in such a way, the most talented and dedicated people would naturally develop to become great athletes. It worked. On Gracie Barra mats, some of the toughest Jiu-Jitsu champions were made and countless doctors, engineers, lawyers, and all kids of people from different ages and background found a positive learning environment they could learn exceptional Jiu-Jitsu techniques and be inspired by Master Carlos Gracie Jr.’s ideals of healthy leaving, good diet, and great friends.

Tyler BosardProfessor Tyler Bosard

Founder and Professor of GB-RGV Academies

Professor Tyler Bosard was the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt in the Rio Grande Valley and is the only Gracie Barra Certified Black Belt Instructor in the RGV.

He was first introduced to Jiu Jitsu in 1998 while in college at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas under Klay Pittman, now a 3rd degree Black Belt under world renowned Professor Carlos Machado. This is also where Tyler was first introduced to his current, Professor, mentor and friend, Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhaes. Tyler was so influenced by Professor Draculino’s insight, charisma, devotion and dedication to Jiu Jitsu he knew it would be something he would eventually make his life´s work.

During Tyler´s last semester in college he worked 3 jobs with the intention to save every dime to be able to move to Brazil after graduating. Upon graduating from Texas Tech University, Tyler backed his bags and moved to Brazil where he furthered his Jiu Jitsu education under now 5th degree Gracie Barra Black Belt Carlos Liberi in Campinas, Sao Paulo and the great Master Carlos Gracie Jr at Gracie Barra in Rio de Janiero. Being so close to the origins and legacy of Jiu Jitsu and exposed to such influential Jiu Jitsu ideology Tyler was further reassured that Jiu Jitsu was a life enhancing sport that he would continue for the rest of his life and wanted to share with others.

Upon returning to Texas, Tyler eventually landed Dallas, Texas where he worked multiple odd jobs but never neglected training and dedicated his free time to improving and increasing his knowledge and skill of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professor Carlos Machado. Being transferred out of the Dallas area for work, Tyler would drive many hours to seek training in Houston under Professor “Draculino” and to Corpus Christi to train with friend and Draculino Black Belt Leo Cantu.

Years of hard work and dedication to the sport paid off when he received his Black Belt from Professor Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhaes early in 2009, the same year he opened Gracie Barra Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville, Texas. Coming full circle in his Jiu Jitsu career Tyler now has been blessed of making his dream become a reality.

Tyler works hard every day striving to improve his teaching skills and his students knowledge by staying up to date with all Gracie Barra and IBJJF Instructor Certifications and Conferences. He also is continuously improving his own knowledge, skill and training by training with his students every day, competing as much as possible and annual trips to Brazil.

Tyler takes pride in spreading the knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to anyone interested, hoping it will bring them as much happiness and fulfillment in their life as it has for him.
