Blue Belt: Embracing Change

Blue Belt: Embracing Change

NOVEMBER 28, 2013

Perseverance is the foundation of all actions.

We believe that belts are more than a decorative accent to our uniforms. Notice where belts are positioned? They are positioned in the centre of our bodies. Our core. This is because belts become our centre, our focus. success and determination is always where our focus lies. We become who we are based solely on what we believe in. Our Jiu-Jitsu belts does exactly that.

The blue belt represents our embracing the impeding change. to train for a blue belt, it takes around 2 years. In these times our bodies have undergone drastic change. These changes are manifested in both the physical, the psychological, and the spiritual. All my life, as a writer, I have been always been great in reading people. Getting into Jiu-Jitsu, I have been privileged to train with Blue Belts. And one thing that most blue belts posses is the ability to embrace the changes and continue on changing.

Physically, blue belts are almost half-way into their physical prime. At this point, let’s say after 9 to 18 months of training, their bodies have been well-adapted into the rigors of training. As they were able to keep up with the higher ranks.

Psychologically, a blue belt is ready to share knowledge. Most instructors (and not just in Gracie Barra) rely on blue belts to guide the new ones. They have come to a point of maturity where they are able to carefully lead those who are new to the art. It’s like a big brother, or an elder sister showing their younger siblings things that will help them function in the household.

Spiritually, a blue belt is closed to being a balanced individual. A blue belt embraces the need to change the way that he thinks. For a blue belt to move forward, he must change the way that he has always thought of himself.

I am proud to say that I have interacted with blue belts that have one at one point in my life, has changed the way that I saw myself. These are what we call, “Kuya” and “Ate.” These is a literal translation to a big brother and big sister. I have seen passionate blue belts take on roles such as leading a class for beginners. Where his patience and understanding culminates excitement, appreciation, and happiness for the art.

Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu is a family. Where we have these Ate and Kuya, to be around to guide us. The campaign that started out almost 20 years ago is becoming bigger and stronger. Because the structure to which we all follow is complete, a structure where 99% of the population of the world is familiar with, and this is the family.

Let us all think of those blue belts who has embraced changed and have chosen to continue the path and lead the new ones to where peace, physical resilience, purpose and family lies.
